A survey of the hull or machinery of a vessel following an incident involving damage. A machinery damage survey is normally a technical narrative type, whereas a hull damage survey would involve a lot of photos. Normally commissioned by the owner or an insurance company. Statements may have to be taken from involved persons. The report would include recommendations for all necessary repairs.  

Arrangements could be made for periodic inspections of the repair works.
